Batman: Arkham Shadow teases series return post-Suicide Squad

Meta gave a small preview of at least one new game that will appear at the Summer Game Fest, Batman: Arkham Shadow. The company revealed a new teaser trailer for the game ahead of the June 7 event, which only revealed the existence of Batman (whether or not he’s Bruce Wayne remains to be seen). The game is coming out on the Meta Quest 3 sometime later this year. It’s the second game in the Arkham series to launch this year, following Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

Camouflaj, the creators of the Iron Man VR title and the Republique series, developed Arkham Shadow. According to Meta, the game is set in the same universe as the other Arkham titles, and Gotham City is once again in danger (not that that’s new). The cinematic trailer is planned to debut at the Summer Game Fest. This is the second VR title set in the Arkham universe following 2016’s Arkham VR from Rocksteady.

Ryan Payton of Camouflaj expanded a bit more on the game’s development on the developer’s website: “We are committed to building upon the beloved foundation laid by the legendary team at Rocksteady, and driven to do it justice… Leaning into our eight years of dedicated VR game development history has enabled us to not only create a distinctly Arkham-feeling game but done in a way that leverages the immersive magic only VR can provide.”

It remains to be seen how Arkham Shadow relates to the story of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which is set in the Arkham continuity. The latter is a colorful story in which the titular squad does as the title suggests and slays various DC superheroes — Batman among them. This, among other features of the game, didn’t go over very well with fans: The game currently sits at a 3.5 User Score on Metacritic. It remains to be seen if a VR-only title will revive the series for discontented fans.
